Another large investment saw us introduce a woodchip Biomass heating system. This renewable energy project provides hot water and heat to the whole Hotel. We are not relying on the burning of fossil fuels to heat the Hotel. We get our Woodchip from a sustainable Provider. It's WFQA approved ensuring top standards in quality and sustainability. It's also EPA approved compliant with environmental guidelines for clean energy.
Well Water & Conservation
We have commissioned a natural spring well in the mountain to the rear of the Hotel. A truly inspiring project that allows us to reduce our water usage and consumption from the mains. We've also introduced aerated shower heads and better faucet control. A truly inspiring tale but one which perhaps stands us ahead of the crowd.
Automated LED lighting
Where possible, we have installed automated LED lighting in the relevant areas of the Hotel. This reduces our energy consumption drastically further aiding the environment.
Smart Heating Controls
We have brought in the fantastic HeatBoss Solution whereby it allows us to zone our all our heat to each and every area of the Hotel as and when needed. No longer just wasting energy by heating unnecessary areas of the Hotel. Nothing worse than being in a Hotel that is far too hot and guests simple open the windows to cool down their room.
IT/Infrastructure Upgrades
We are always upgrading and improving our equipment. Where possible we upgrade to the latest models which in turn prove to be even more economical than the last. All such efforts combined puts the 4* Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa in a great position for future sustainability.
In House Laundry
We boast our very own in-house laundry services for the Hotel. This has been such a welcome addition. Allows for better quality control and efficiency but not to mention helps us reduce our carbon footprint massively. No longer large lorries with deliveries a few times a week. Everything runs seamless and all the while using hot water from our Biomass system and Well not to mention Solar to power the machines.
Waste
We try to be as pro-active as possible and thankfully food waste is kept to a minimum here at the 4* Ballyliffin Lodge & Spa. This is an area that is always changing and upgrading and we like to remain in touch with that where possible.
Recycling/Paper/Plastic Waste
We are always seeking to improve in our recycling efforts where possible. We have eradicated plastic straws and cut down on internal paper and plastic use. We also push our Suppliers to cut down on their waste also which is very important.
Our Guest rooms provide complimentary eco-friendly, fully recyclable water cartons as opposed to plastic bottles to all Guests. The paper is made from trees that are responsibly harvested and renewable and also contribute to lower carbon emmissions. Sugarcane is used in the caps and carton shoulders which also reduces our carbon emissions by utilising a resource that grows back year on year.
Eco Products
Where possible we endeavour to use non-harmful products to the environment. As more and more technologies are being released this is an area we are keen to keep up to date with.
Purchasing/sourcing
Our aim is to purchase locally sourced products to the best of our ability. In terms of food, we seek to get our; meat, fish, veg fruit etc.with the shortest transport and logistics available. Our goal is to support local employment also which is a key ingredient to a successful community.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
We are at advanced stages now and hope to bring this solution to fruition now circa early 2026. Will be a truly welcome addition and one that will satisfy our EV Guests.
Staff/Hotel Operating Policies
Our staff are trained to adopt our environment saving policies throughout their Departments. May be simple things like printing in 'Greyscale' only and printing on both sides to cut down on paper waste. We also recycle and re-use paper, boxes, materials where applicable. Such things may seem minor but when practices by all staff over long periods of time then it makes a big difference. We promote car pooling to work where applicable also. Simply creating that mindset allows for us to attain and achieve such high 'Eco standings'.
Eco Gardening
Our Gardening Team work hard to promote wonderful settings and visuals for the Hotel with their careful selection of plants, bushes and trees etc. all the while allowing for insects to successfully pollinate. Irrigating such areas is done with water from our natural Spring well also. Nothing like promoting nature right on your own doorstep.
Sustainable Tourism
We are always happy to support Sustainable Tourism efforts throughout. We work closely with local Tourism Offerings. We promote nature, protecting the environment and cutting down on environmental impact by Guests.
Picnics - We can provide Guests with packed lunch or snacks to take with them while out enjoying the local area. Our Packaging can be recycled thereafter.
Travelling on foot or Bike - Cut down on emissions. We promote Guests cycling around or perhaps on foot to enjoy the local beaches and scenery or the new Greenways in place and being developed in the Peninsula. We have many Guides and information leaflets plus even digital QR listings and information for Guests to enjoy.
We are always seeking to add and improve on our sustainable Tourism offerings and will keep pushing hard in this area. We have some exciting new initiatives currently ongoing and we will update here when complete.
Summary
We have invested very heavily in the above Systems, Policies and Projects in a bid to reduce our carbon footprint, protect the environment and push sustainability. But, we can always do more. We are leading by example with our efforts in our Industry and hopefully other Businesses will seek to adopt such practices also.
